Photo Time Capsule FAQ
The short version of how the capsule works, what we hold for you, and what to do if someone sent you one.
Is someone holding a capsule for me?
Someone you know sealed a Photo Time Capsule on Viallo and chose you as a delivery recipient. We’re holding the photos privately and emailing them today — no Viallo account required. If you weren’t expecting this, you can ignore the email or use the unsubscribe link to remove yourself.
Five we hear most.
- What if my email stops working before delivery?
- We send a check-in once every five years to confirm. If a delivery attempt fails, we try your backup contact — you can add one in Settings. If we never reach you, we hold the capsule and try again on the next anniversary.
- Can I add more photos after sealing?
- No. Sealing is permanent — that is what makes it feel like a capsule. If you want to add more, just create a second capsule with a different delivery date.
- Can I open it early?
- Yes. Sign in at any time and go to My capsules to break the seal before the delivery date. There is no penalty — but once you open it, it cannot be re-sealed.
- What happens if Viallo shuts down?
- We will deliver every unopened capsule before we close. If we can’t, the recovery key is emailed to your backup contact so you can decrypt the archive yourself.
- Where are the photos stored?
- Cloudflare R2 in Frankfurt. Encrypted at rest with AES-256. The decryption key is held by Viallo and used only at delivery time. The photos are never seen by us or shown to any third party.
